We have created this piece by taking inspiration from one of Japan’s most renowned ukiyo-e artists, Katsushika Hokusai, and his masterpiece Gaifū Kaisei (commonly known as Red Fuji), adding a modern twist to its design.
---------
Katsushika Hokusai: A leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, globally renowned for his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series.
Gaifū Kaisei (Red Fuji): A striking depiction of Mount Fuji in vivid red, widely known by its nickname, Red Fuji.
The mountain’s crimson-hued slopes and powerful composition captivate viewers, making it a timeless masterpiece that continues to inspire even after 200 years.
---------
Katsushika Hokusai was an artist who continued painting for over 70 years.
There is a well-known episode where he once said, "If only I had another five or ten years, I could have truly become a painter." Despite achieving immense fame, Hokusai never saw himself as complete—he remained in constant pursuit of greater heights. This unwavering dedication to improvement and exploration is a testament to his extraordinary ambition.
Declaring a work "finished" is important, but at the same time, the mindset of "not yet, just a little more" or "how can I make this even better?" is what ultimately creates pieces that continue to move people long after they are made.
Hokusai was also famous for changing his artist name multiple times throughout his life.
One of his most striking names in his later years was Gakyō Rōjin Manji—which translates to "The Old Man Mad About Painting." Even by today’s standards, it’s an incredibly bold and edgy self-branding choice.
Doesn’t that make you even more curious about Hokusai?
Digging deeper, you’ll find that he moved residences frequently and reportedly cared little about anything other than painting—including basic necessities like food and clothing. Truly a one-of-a-kind artist.
Why not take this opportunity to explore the world of Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan’s most iconic ukiyo-e masters?
Our FUJI collection, inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic masterpiece and reimagined with a modern twist, is now available for purchase!
